Ambient Alternative at the Anza

Ambient Alternative at the Anza poster

I'll be playing guitar in this cool event. I'm excited about this one because we finally have a line-up of bands that will go together well. I've played many gigs with Elza in Vancouver but over the last two years we always seem to get paired up with good, but mis-matched bands. Usually we are opening for bands that are of a completely different genre.

So one day I suggested Elza just produce her own show, that way she can choose the bands that we play with. I suggested she call it something like "A night of Post-Rock," or some such thing. Well, now it's happening. She called it "Ambient Alternative at the Anza."

The poster is pretty cool too. Yes there will actually be cello, but I don't think there will be a cat. All the details for the show are below. I hope to see you there.

Elza's music is introspective, haunting and emotionally charged. Her dark and intricate sound is inspired by a wide variety of styles, drawing mainly from 90's alternative acts and mixed in seamlessly with her classical piano training and synths explorations. Elza brings her studio-born dreams to audiences with 7-piece live band, dazzling crowds with her rich, dark grooves.

Voted one of the Top 50 Blogs

Thanks to Guitar Trance for voting my website one of the top 50 guitar blogs on the internet recently.

I haven't spent a lot of time on Guitar Trance but I did find some useful articles on pedals, like the article on how to choose a Fuzz pedal. There's a lot of detail in there for someone who wants help finding a fuzz pedal that will be right for them. The language http://healthsavy.com can be a little dry, but there is a lot of detail as you can see the article doesn't skimp on content.

How about this article on Chorus pedals? I've been listening to the latest Ryan Adams record and it's got some sweet chorus effects on the guitars on some tracks. It's inspired me to pull out my old Ibanez Super Stereo Chorus that I've had since the 80s.

Don't Think Twice, It's All Right - Bob Dylan Cover

Perhaps the most passive-aggressive break-up song ever written, it's also one of my favourite songs by Bob Dylan. He'll be performing here in Vancouver in July so he's been on my mind.

I teach this song to a lot of my guitar students because it's a common fingerstyle pattern everyone should learn.

I recorded my own cover of it and posted it to YouTube. Hope you like it.

Custom Edjan Stratocaster Guitar

I am totally blown away by this new guitar, custom-made just for me by Vancouver luthier Jeremy Edjan! This is the second Edjan strat I own. This one is on par with the high-level Fenders, the ones that hang on the expensive wall at the back of the shop!

Not only does it look amazing, the sound from the hand-wound pickups is thick, meaty. And yet it still has that distinct pharmacy Stratocaster tone. The playability is just as good if not better than the Fender Pro Telecaster I bought a few months ago.

I am truly honored to own this guitar. I can't wait to play a show with it.
