Dita von Tease to Midi PDF Print E-mail

Dita von Tease is the new model for Wonderbra, which makes perfect sense and personally I encourage artists to make sponsorship deals that are related to their craft (I would). She stars in a new advertisement for Wonderbra so naturally I had to check it out.

The first time I watched it I was very distracted -- not by Dita -- but by the music. Something didn't sound quite right about the horn section. Then I realized that the big band music you hear once Dita starts dancing is not performed by real human musicians. It's all computer music controlled by midi instruments.

It's impressive how natural midi instruments are starting to sound. But I can tell from the staccato passages and the starts and ends of notes. No band of human beings can play that perfectly in sync and the sound still has has that slight computer tone to it.

Indeed, no band can play that perfectly together -- to the millisecond -- and it doesn't even sound that good when you hear it played that perfectly. A perfect performance does not make for an artistic or moving performance.

And really! This is a commercial for Wonderbra starring Dita von Tease and featuring a sexy "bump and grind" big band arrangement. Surely they could have hired a real band to play the music.

I appreciate the use of computers in music and I love computers myself. But this is just a disappointing use of technology which is far too often abused for "cheaping out." ....
