Both The Surrey Now and the New Westminster Newsleader published articles on Beatles Burlesque this week.
In the Surrey Now, Tom Zillich writes: "Blue Morris is on a mission to fuse the music of The Beatles with bumping, grinding burlesque dancing." ... I sure am!
You can read the entire Surrey Now article on the Surrey Now website.
The New West Newsleader asked me about my experience with live music and burlesque and how I got involved with that. I told her that I wanted to bring live music back to burlesque because that's the way it was done in the old days. All that bumping and grinding would have made the records skip.
She quoted me on that, though I don't think I said it with enough humour. It comes off as though I was serious. haha.

New Orleans Burlesque Documentary

Producers of a New Orleans burlesque documentary, Save Our Souls, are offering a grand prize of a trip for two to New Orleans and a chance to perform with Slow Burn Burlesque and the stars of the movie in New Orleans, July 2012
"Save Our Souls is a new documentary from director Mike Sanchez, which gives a raw and intimate glimpse of the neo-burlesque scene in New Orleans in the months after Hurricane Katrina. Personal interviews with the artists strip away the glitter and lashes, revealing the humanity of the art-form that calls the broken city "home."
"As New Orleans rebuilds, the stories and the performances unfold for Sanchez's camera, playing out to a hand-picked rock 'n roll score, which features music from The Yelling and Russian Mafia band Debauche.
With over 10,000 followers on Twitter and a loyal following on Facebook, the producers of Save Our Souls would like to give their supporters a chance to become part of the story by giving them a chance to win a trip for two to New Orleans and an opportunity to take the stage with Slow Burn Burlesque for their show at Howlin’ Wolf in July.
Fans and artists are invited to submit a video of their best burlesque routine by April 30, 2012 to be judged by the Slow Burn Burlesque troupe. Once the submissions have been narrowed down to three finalists, the fans will be asked to "like" their favorite video, and the video with the most "likes" wins the grand prize.

21st Century Burlesque Magazine

I am feeling incredibly honored this month. Just last week I was asked to perform at Tease-O-Rama San Francisco, and this week I am featured in 21st Century Burlesque Magazine, with my picture right there on the front page.
I originally published this article on my blog, and somehow the editor of 21CB read it and asked if she could re-pubish it on their site.
I am told I will also be in their upcoming Print Edition! They are doing a special Print Edition coming out soon that will include a feature on men in burlesque and my picture will be included! It's going to be a "118-page, full colour celebration of burlesque." Keep an eye on this page to reserve a copy of the special edition in print!
The Magazine used to be called "21st Century Pinups" so I'm thinking maybe this makes me a pinup?

The next Beatles Burlesque show will be at the historic Columbia Theatre on March 24th! Tickets are available from Brown Paper Tickets.

Formerly known as the Burr Theatre, the 1927 theatre is valued as one of the only surviving atmospheric theatres in B.C. and one of only a few remaining in Canada. The inside has been completely restored and it's beautiful!
The theatre is just a block from the Columbia SkyTrain station, so it's easy to get to even if you don't live in New West.
Dr. Sketchy Vancouver - Dandy of the Underworld

Last night I had the pleasure to model for Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School. If you're not familiar with this, it's quite a phenomenon now. There are currently Dr. Sketchy's in over 100 cities around the world!
The first Dr. Sketchy was started in 2005 by an art-school drop out at a dive-bar in Brooklyn. Here is how its creator describes it:
Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art school is the world's premier alt.drawing movement. Artists draw glamorous underground performers in an atmosphere of boozy conviviality.
I guess that means that I'm a "glamorous underground performer!"
Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School is what happens when a simple question is asked: Why can't figure drawing be sexy? The models for Dr. Sketchy Vancouver are primarily burlesque performers. Part art class and part cabaret, it's three hours of drinking, drawing, and decadence.
Dandy of the Underworld
Shary Contrary of Dr. Sketchy Vancouver wanted to do a tribute to Sebastian Horsley for her next event, and when she thought about which man in Vancouver might be able to pull it off, she thought of me. I am not much like Horsley, but I certainly do have the wardrobe!
Horsley was an eccentric artist and a self-professed dandy. "Clothes are not clothes. You're wearing your thoughts, your attitudes to life." He never travelled without his top hat. He once said, either "you conceal who you are and you hope to be accepted, or you reveal who you are and you risk rejection. I'm in the second category."
He describes Dandyism as "a form of self-worship which dispenses with the need to find happiness from others, especially women." ....
