Carly Rae Jepsen is now in the top 8 of Canadian Idol and we're all voting for her. My mom voted for her for two hours straight on Monday night.
In the last episode she sang "Georgia on My Mind." It was kind of sad for me to watch her sing that song because it's a song we used to perform regularly, for a couple years. But it's a great choice for her and she sings it wonderfully.
Here are the lyrics to another song we played, this one the famous "Blues for Carly" (aka "I Want to Meet Boys") which Carly sang on our indie CD which is available for sale online. As I mentioned in a previous post, it took a lot of persuasion to get Carly to sing this song. But it became probably our most famous and most frequently requested song at gigs.... |

It's no surprise to any of us lucky enough to have heard Carly perform live, nor to those of us who got to perform with her for two years, but Carly is now in the top 10 of Canadian Idol!
The competition is getting pretty stiff. The people who have no talent have all been knocked off and now it's 10 young singers who all have pipes, but some of whom have rather questionable taste in music and clothes. But of course I am definitely not the target market for this show, so what do I know?
In this week's show they mentioned that Carly used to sing for a swing band. When interviewing Carly, the host of the show Ben Mulroney says that he wants to see Carly perform with the swing band. Oh but if only they mentioned the name of that band... the Blue Morris 6! |

AbeBooks has been a huge phenomenon in the book industry. It allows used book dealers, or really just about anyone with some dusty old paperbacks, to sell their books through one unified website. Since AbeBooks took off, Amazon has copied their idea and incorporated it into their site. On Amazon product pages you will often see something like "13 NEW and 23 USED editions available." This is the AbeBooks model ported to Amazon.
Now there's a website that's trying to do the same thing for music, by selling used CDs and of course used vinyl. There may be other sites, but NetSoundsMusic has showed up in my web wanderings lately.
While I'm all for companies selling and promoting books and music, the problem with AbeBooks is that authors don't make any money from the sales of used books, and likewise musicians don't many any royalties from the sale of used records and CDs which is what NetSoundsMusic is selling. It's a loss of potential sales.

Carly has made it to the Top 22 in Canadian Idol! We were a little worried because we didn't see much of Carly in Monday night's episode but we figured it was because they wanted to show a lot of the other contestants before they showed us what Carly can do.
In last night's episode Carly was criticized rather harshly by the judges for her duet performance with Geoffrey Stone. I actually thought it was rather good. Judging from the short clips we saw, she complimented her partner well. But the judges didn't like the way she was dressed and rudely asked her to remove her hat and scarf. I think Zack felt that the clothes were somehow preventing her from showing her true self through the music. The judges had little to say to Geoffrey Stone other than "we have no problem with you" so things were not looking good for Carly at that point.
But her following solo performance of "Breathe" drew judge Sass Jordan to tears so we knew then that she was a shoe in. Carly was chosen and Geoffrey Stone was not. When the judges told Carly she was selected for the top 22 she knelt down on the stage, held her head in her hands and cried. After she gained her composure Carly hugged Sass Jordan and then remarked "boy you smell nice!" That was a good laugh....
