Books I've Read
The state of music today, 1888

"Only sick music makes money today."
- Friedrich Nietzche, in 1888

I wouldn't say I agree with this 100%, but it does make think of another quote I read recently:

"I don't know anything about music. In my line, you don't have to."
- Elvis Presley

Jason Moran
Jason Moran tells a story
It is often said that when you listen to a musician improvise a solo, you are listing to his "story." Just like when you talk to friends and they tell you how their days have been, the musician on stage or in the studio is telling you a story of how his day has been, he's just using a different language--the language of music.

NPR featured a track from Jason Moran's latest CD Artist In Residence which takes this idea one step further. Moran takes recorded conversations and improvises on the piano musical lines that are inspired by the tones and rhythms in the recorded speech.

Oscar Peterson shaken by racial slurs

Oscar Peterson
Oscar Peterson (public domain)

One of Canada's most famous jazz musicians, Oscar Peterson, says he is fed up with "bigots" who drive by his Mississauga home shouting racial slurs.

This story appeared on the front page of the Vancouver Sun today. I am glad they covered it on the front page and shocked this is happening. Here's a guy who has recorded more than 200 albums, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and even had a school named after him, yet he and his family are heckled at with racist remarks from people driving by! And all this in Canada -- a country that prides itself on tolerance!
