Jason Moran
Jason Moran tells a story
It is often said that when you listen to a musician improvise a solo, you are listing to his "story." Just like when you talk to friends and they tell you how their days have been, the musician on stage or in the studio is telling you a story of how his day has been, he's just using a different language--the language of music.

NPR featured a track from Jason Moran's latest CD Artist In Residence which takes this idea one step further. Moran takes recorded conversations and improvises on the piano musical lines that are inspired by the tones and rhythms in the recorded speech.

You have to hear it to get a feel for just how interesting this idea is. And it's not just academic. Listen to "Artists Ought To Be Writing" and you'll see just how beautiful this can be, too.

Listen to it from NPR's website.
