New daily jazz show for CBC Radio 2
Monday, 19 March 2007

CBC LogoThis post is for the Canadian readers. CBC Radio has been making changes and I for one am looking forward to Katie Malloch's new weekday radio program featuring jazz. And it starts tonight at six. The sad thing is that After Hours has been cancelled. I have been listening to After Hours for many years, albeit sporadically. I liked Andy Sheppard's show, and of course Ross Porter before him, though I must admit I didn't listen to it regularly because it was on just a little too late for me.

The new show is called Tonic and it airs every weekday from 6 to 8 in the evening, starting tonight. Katie's excellent Sunday show, Jazz Beat, has also been cancelled to make way for the new one. Hopefully Katie will still include some of the live broadcasts from jazz festivals across Canada, as she did on Jazz Beat.

Here is how the CBC website describes the new show:

It's impossible not to love Katie Malloch. And if you were a huge fan of Jazz Beat – or even if you've never heard Katie – don’t miss the debut of Tonic, her new jazz show on CBC Radio Two. Katie has a wonderful personality and a great sense of humour, along with a solid knowledge of jazz music. And she'll be playing an incredible range of great stuff – starting tonight. This evening, she'll have everything from Carmen McRae singing “Nice Work if You can Get It" through Canadian guitarist Jake Langley’s original tune "Dot-Com" to a collaboration between Sergio Mendes and William from the Black-Eyed Peas – a Latin-infused tune called "Samba of the Blessing."
Unwind with a refreshing musical cocktail served with style by CBC Radio's sparkling jazz host, Katie Malloch. Katie brings her sense of humour, knowledge and passion for music to the Radio 2 airwaves Monday through Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Tonic presents a mix of jazz that is warm, soulful and lyrical, from a broad time span in the jazz chronology. Canadian jazz is a fundamental component of the show. And along with jazz, Katie features a blend of soul, Latin and world-influenced jazz creating a perfect transition from day to evening. Tonic is a show for new listeners who are curious about jazz, as well as those already familiar with this wonderful music and its traditions.

I wonder if Katie would be interested in spinning some swing by a few unknown musicians from Vancouver... whose favourite colour happens to be...
