Carly has made it to the Top 22 in Canadian Idol! We were a little worried because we didn't see much of Carly in Monday night's episode but we figured it was because they wanted to show a lot of the other contestants before they showed us what Carly can do.
In last night's episode Carly was criticized rather harshly by the judges for her duet performance with Geoffrey Stone. I actually thought it was rather good. Judging from the short clips we saw, she complimented her partner well. But the judges didn't like the way she was dressed and rudely asked her to remove her hat and scarf. I think Zack felt that the clothes were somehow preventing her from showing her true self through the music. The judges had little to say to Geoffrey Stone other than "we have no problem with you" so things were not looking good for Carly at that point.
But her following solo performance of "Breathe" drew judge Sass Jordan to tears so we knew then that she was a shoe in. Carly was chosen and Geoffrey Stone was not. When the judges told Carly she was selected for the top 22 she knelt down on the stage, held her head in her hands and cried. After she gained her composure Carly hugged Sass Jordan and then remarked "boy you smell nice!" That was a good laugh.
Little Sister
The end of the show was a little shocking for me. They aired some quick excerpts of a photo shoot of Carly dressed up all sexy. I just can't help but to think of Carly as a little sister and I literally had to turn my head when they showed that. This is not going to be easy for me.
It wasn't long ago that I had to beg Carly to sing the song, "Blues for Carly," which I wrote based on something she once said at a rehearsal, something about going an a date with some "boy." The lyrics I wrote start "I want to meet boys... I love to flirt..." It's very innocent but it took a lot of persuasion to get Carly to sing it. You can hear it from the Radio player in the left margin of the website, or buy the CD. It's also on iTunes Canada.
We were very confused by the commercials they ran leading up to Tuesday's show. The commercials showed Carly crying on stage while the voice over said "There's only one spot left..." We were expecting it to be down to the wire for Carly. But in the actual show those words are spoken to another contestant, and the footage of Carly crying on stage is showing her tears of relief for having been chosen for the Top 22.
The local newspaper "Metro" has an article on Carly today. I don't like how the article suggests that Carly has little experience other than high-school musical theatre. It says "Jepsen thinks performing without a red curly wig [Annie] or a poodle skirt [Grease] will be a big adjustment for her." But Carly has done many solo and band gigs with her own music at venues around Vancouver, and of course she gigged with us for two years and I never saw her in a red wig or a poodle skirt. But journalists often try to simplify things to create bite-sized stories.
I will be away in DC next week so I'll be recording the show but I know that I won't be able to keep myself from the Internet searching for results before I get back. I honestly never thought I would be such a devotee of Canadian Idol but with Carly on the show, how can I not? Good luck Carly!
