Carly Jepsen and the Blue Morris 6 in the Vancouver Sun Print E-mail
Tuesday, 17 July 2007
Article in the Vancouver Sun on Carly Jepsen and the Blue Morris 6It's no surprise to see Carly's face in the Vancouver Sun these days, but it was a pleasant surprise to see that the Blue Morris 6 Swing Band also gets a mention in today's paper. The story is is on pages C1 and C5 and the band is mentioned near the end of the article on C5:
Jepsen branched out into performing with a band about three years ago when she saw an ad in a newspaper. The group said it was looking for a saxophone player. That didn't deter Jepsen. She contacted them anyway.
"I called them up and said: "I know that you're looking for a saxophone player, but do you have a singer yet?"
Now she's part of the Blue Morris 6, a group that performs old-style songs by performers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and Duke Ellington.

I remember that phone call very well. I was skeptical, but I thought, what the heck? I'll give the girl a shot...

Two very memorable rehearsals

I didn't plan on having a singer when I started the band. When I met Carly at the rehearsal I was a little surprised to find a cute little gal who looked even younger than she sounded on the phone. But when she started to sing, my entire plans for the band changed at that moment. From that moment I knew I wanted a singer, and I wanted Carly Rae Jepsen as that singer.

The second rehearsal turned into another interesting story that Carly and I have often laughed about. I arrived a bit early and started carrying my gear into the studios. Standing outside was a girl wearing a hat pulled far down over her face and large sunglasses. She said "hi" to me and I just looked back at her with an expression that said, "who are you?"

When she came inside the studio and took off her hat and sunglasses I realized it was Carly. I had just walked right passed her without realizing it! It turns out that the night before Carly had broken up with her boyfriend and she wasn't feeling well. But there was no way she was going to cancel on us. Despite the mascara running down her face, partially obscured by the sunglasses, she sang her heart out and we were all very impressed yet again.

Oh yes, and I should mention that the ad for the saxophone player that Carly answered was doubly successful. I also got responses from Nick Kempinski and Greg Lui. Could I be any luckier?

Watch Carly on Canadian Idol tonight!

Carly will be on Canadian Idol tonight competing in the top 10. I believe the show tonight will air from 8pm to 9:30pm on CTV. Don't forget to vote for Carly after the show!
